Thursday 12 November 2026 · 6–8pm
BN9 Studio, Newhaven · Free for THE SUSSEX 2026 entrants
What goes into an open call?
Where do submission fees go, how does selection work, and what do artists want from the opportunities they enter?
Join Sussex Contemporary’s Creative Director, Jo Myles, for an open conversation about the process behind our exhibitions, and your experience of taking part.
We’ll share how SC’s open calls work, from submission income and exhibition costs to judging, selection and the practical decisions involved in bringing a show together.
There will be space to ask questions, share experiences and discuss what makes an opportunity worthwhile.
We also want to hear from you.
What do you value in an open call?
What information helps you decide whether to enter?
Where could communication, access or support improve?
This session marks the beginning of an ongoing discussion between Sussex Contemporary and the creative community. Your perspectives will help inform how we develop future opportunities.
Everyone who entered THE SUSSEX 2026 is welcome, whether or not your work was selected.
The discussion will focus on the wider process; we won’t be reviewing individual submissions or revisiting judging decisions.
Free to attend. Please book your place so we can plan seating and welcome everyone comfortably.
