The Business of Art: Making Your Practice Pay

Thursday 26 November 2026 · 6–8pm
BN9 Studio, Newhaven · £35 per person

You put time, skill and money into your creative practice. How do you make sure the business decisions around it support you?

Join Sussex Contemporary’s Creative Director, Jo Myles, for a practical, face-to-face workshop exploring pricing, selling and choosing opportunities. Held within THE SUSSEX 2026: SHELTER exhibition, the session draws on Jo’s experience of mentoring since 2012, curating exhibitions, selling artwork and building creative partnerships.

We’ll look at the questions artists regularly face: what to charge, what a sale actually leaves you, which opportunities deserve your time and money, and how to feel more confident talking to potential buyers.

What we’ll cover

  • Pricing your work: accounting for materials, framing, your time and selling costs while developing a consistent approach.

  • Understanding what you earn: working through what remains from a sale after commission and other expenses.

  • Choosing opportunities: assessing exhibitions, fairs and open calls against your goals, budget and capacity.

  • Having sales conversations: helping people connect with your work, answering questions and following up.

  • Planning your next steps: deciding where to focus your effort to support a more sustainable practice.

How it works

This two-hour workshop combines practical examples, individual exercises and group discussion, with time for questions.

Bring a notebook and the details of one artwork you’d like to price or reassess, including its current price and approximate costs. You’re also welcome to bring details of an exhibition, fair or open call you’re considering.

You’ll leave with a worked pricing example, a checklist for assessing opportunities and agreed actions to take forward. Workshop materials are included.

The session is open to artists and makers at all stages, whether you’re preparing to sell for the first time or reviewing how an established practice earns its income. You don’t need to have entered or been selected for THE SUSSEX 2026.

Maximum 25 participants. Book your place in advance.
