60. Summer Garden Silk Room Divider by Eleanor Walker-Todd

£1,985.00

Catalogue number: 60

Artist: Eleanor Walker-Todd

Title: Summer Garden Silk Room Divider

Medium: Vintage room divider, upholstered in reclaimed silk - hand-dyed and eco-printed using garden flowers

Dimensions: H172cm x W150cm when extended flat x D2cm when extended flat

Inspired by Standen and William Morris, I collaborate with nature, composing plants to create the print. Handmade, functional and beautiful, the piece reflects a harmony of craft, utility and garden.

Summer Garden is a vintage room divider reimagined through hand-dyed silk, using plants grown and gathered from the artist’s own garden. The front panels are created using Tataki Zome (flower pounding), where individual blooms are carefully selected and composed, then hammered directly into the cloth. As the season waned, fading flowers and foliage were steam-printed into the background, creating a contrast between crisp impressions and softer, watercolour-like forms.

The reverse is dyed in a marigold petal vat, where dispersed petals leave subtle variations and deeper marks across the silk. The artist grew, harvested and processed the plant material, dyed the silk, and upholstered the screen, finishing each panel with a velvet trim.
Rooted in the Arts and Crafts principles of William Morris, the piece reflects a unity of design and making, where natural materials, handcraft and everyday function are closely connected within the home.

Eleanor is a textile artist based in Worthing, working with plant dyes grown in her garden. Her practice explores an Anglo-Japanese approach to textile design, shaped by seasonality, material knowledge and handcraft.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
