74. Blush Canopy I by Ellie Hipkin

£400.00

Catalogue number: 74

Artist: Ellie Hipkin

Title: Blush Canopy I

Medium: Textile painting with embroidery

Dimensions: 63cm x 34cm x 1.5cm

My artwork is inspired by the trees and natural landscape surrounding Standen House, alongside the craftsmanship and design principles of the Arts and Crafts movement that are so integral to the house itself.

Designed by Philip Webb and enriched with William Morris interiors, Standen celebrates handcrafted workmanship and a deep connection to nature — values that strongly resonate within my own textile practice. Through the combination of painted fabrics, layered textiles, and free-motion embroidery, my work explores texture, stitch, and surface in a way that honours traditional craft techniques while bringing a contemporary interpretation to them.

Much like the Morris & Co. designs throughout Standen, my work draws inspiration from organic forms, seasonal change, and the beauty of the natural world. The surrounding gardens and trees provide both visual inspiration and a sense of atmosphere, which I reinterpret through expressive mark-making, paint, and stitch to create modern nature-inspired textile artworks.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
