15. Drapery Study in Glass (I) in yellow by Grace Ayson
Made from: Hand painted and silver stained mouthblown glass, kiln fired. Lead. Rope and metal hook.

My series of drapery studies in glass draw inspiration from decorative patterns in the arts and crafts, from the carved drapery of classical sculpture, and the stylised drapery depicted in traditional stained-glass windows. This series of glass works aims to translate the tactile softness of fabric into the inherently rigid and fragile medium of glass.
I hope that displaying the work in Standen House will create a dialogue with its rich history in the arts and crafts, beautiful patterns, decorative details, furniture, textiles and fabrics. The house and its heritage of design and truth to materials is an inspiration.
Working with the traditions of stained glass but innovating with contemporary techniques, in 'Drapery Study in Glass (I) in Yellow', I have gently sculpted the glass to create a fold where the piece hangs, while also creating the illusion of softness through painted detail and acid-etching techniques and lead lines. By working into the surface of the glass, I build painted tonal variation, pattern, and texture that evoke the look and sense of fabric.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
