13. SPAB Scholarship 2025: A Journey through Print by Katie Campbell
Made from: 25 Linocut prints displayed in a handbound card and timber concertina with hand stitching & carving
Year made: 2026
Dimensions: 15 cm x 10 cm x 3.5 cm
The 25 Linoprints depict elements from historic buildings across the country, tracking a journey of conservation learning on the ‘SPAB Scholarship’: which brought me to Standen to see the roof repairs in 2025.
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) was founded by William Morris to protect historic buildings from damage and decay. Since 1930, SPAB has run a Scholarship programme to teach young Architects, Engineers & Surveyors good conservation practice, sending four of us off around the entire UK to learn practical skills from crafts people and visit live sites of repair projects: ensuring Morris’ legacy of care is passed down to each new generation of practitioners.
I created prints to record every part of the country we visited, spanning from Sussex to Orkney, Anglesey to Suffolk. I was captured by the beauty of the handmade at Standen, so decided to collate my prints into a ‘Concertina’ format. Following a long tradition of 'Leporellos', a style of folding book to tell a visual story, I decided to mount all the prints I made on the road in sequence, and commit to making everything by hand: the bookbinding, stitching, and carving on the front cover.
Purchased artworks will remain on display as part of the exhibition until it closes on 30 September. Buyers may then choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Courier dispatches will commence from 7 October. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page.
