11. The Adventurers (Lightbox) by Victoria McLean
Made from: Screen-printed enamel on glass from original linocut prints in a bespoke hand-painted wooden lightbox.
Year made: 2026
Dimensions: 32.5 cm x 32.5 cm x 8 cm
An oak-tree narrative, rooted in nature and the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, unfolds across three illuminated boxes: The Companions gather at the base, The Adventurers climb the trunk, and The Observers nest in the canopy.
Originally conceived as eight hand-cut linocuts, each print was scanned, enlarged and digitally collaged to define distinct foreground and background layers. Those layers became individual colour separations, hand screen-printed onto glass with specialist mediums and glass enamels. Each fired panel was then housed in a bespoke, hand-painted wooden lightbox.
The work marries traditional craft and contemporary printmaking: meticulous hand-cut linocut, tactile screen-print techniques and kiln-firing sit alongside digital enlargement and collage, all presented within crafted timber. Illuminated from within, the pieces translate close, intimate workmanship into a luminous, functional object - echoing the Arts and Crafts conviction that beauty should enrich everyday life. This synthesis offers a considered response to the historic interiors of Standen House and creates a dialogue between past techniques and present technologies.
Purchased artworks will remain on display as part of the exhibition until it closes on 30 September. Buyers may then choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Courier dispatches will commence from 7 October. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page.
