Umbrellas in snowy Gion

Artist’s statement
While walking through the old Geisha neighbourhood of Gion in Kyoto, I captured on my phone a rare appearance of three Geiko in traditional dress carrying umbrellas and shopping bags. Their umbrellas were angled down to protect their hair and faces from the heavy snowfall and possibly to provide shelter from public gaze. The contrast of the bright splashes of colour these figures made with the monotone snowy landscape depicted the idea of shelter in an interesting and unusual way.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
