The Pigeon House
Photograph
Dimensions: 2 (H), 74 (L), 54 (W)
Artist’s statement
This unique hexagonal pigeon house, with no central pillar, stands at the ancestral home of Marianne North, who loved the peace of Rougham. She described herself as “a wild bird” who “like[s] liberty”. The pigeon house was built in 1695 by Marianne’s ancestor Roger North, a musician and pioneer. It offers shelter and protection, while the birds above are free to fly. The image reflects Marianne’s own tension between having a place of refuge and her lifelong desire for freedom.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
