Hermit Cave, Hastings Country Park

Acrylic on board

Dimensions: 60 x 60 x 3cm

Artist’s statement

Caves are our first shelter. This is the Hermit Cave in Ecclesbourne Glen, Hastings Country Park. It was the home of John Hancox, a former London draper who arrived in Hastings around 1893 after falling on hard times. Known as the East Hill Hermit, he lived there until his death aged 74 in 1918. After more than a century of abandonment, it's occupied again - an uncomfortable reminder of how precarious life can be. Straying off the path, none of us are more than a few steps from this cave.

All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.

Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.

For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
