Jacqueline Freeman
Retreat in the Ruins
Oil paint on box canvas
Dimensions: 91.4 x 61 x 1.5
Artist’s statement
Retreat in the Ruins responds to my visit to an abandoned Italian village devastated by earthquake and reborn as a haven for artists and free spirits. Its ruined architecture shelters traces of past and present lives, while the Art Retreat accommodation fosters creativity, belonging and renewal. Figures, a ghostly sculpture, surreal blue cat and shadowy passage suggest stories both real and imagined. Here, shelter becomes more than refuge: it protects dreams, identity and creative freedom.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
