Joseph Laffan
Hollow
Mixed media (Charcoal and encaustic)
Dimensions: 79cm x 40cm x4cm
Artist’s statement
Rooted in the landscape of my sister's farm in Ireland, Hollow explores incidental places of shelter found in overgrowth and hedgerows. Using dense charcoal and graphite, I trace the architecture of nature before using encaustic wax to soften, obscure and carve back into the surface. The work sits between what is revealed and concealed, enclosure and exposure, and the way familiar places can retain a sense of the unknowable.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
