What Holds Us Here
drying rack, shirts, felt, tiles, cord, tree scent
Dimensions: 190x200x200cm
Artist’s statement
The work considers the proximity between seeking physical shelter and seeking ideological shelter as the piece sits between domestic object and organic trees. Drawing on Scouting, the Kibbo Kift and romantic legacies, a uniform becomes another kind of shelter, a skin through which identity, belonging and belief can be worn. The camp, home, uniform and group produce shelters, while quietly establishing boundaries around who belongs, what remains outside and how difficult it becomes to leave.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
