The Nightjar Place
oil on board
Dimensions: 36 x 31 x 2
Artist’s statement
Developers often justify cutting down a mature tree by promising to plant another. A tree for a tree - a simple exchange. But a tree of 200 years old is nothing like a sapling in a plastic tube: it has become a huge structure providing shelter for hundreds of species including birds, moths, bats, beetles, lichens and fungi. The tree in this painting is from a protected woodland where nightjars are sometimes still heard.
All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.
Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.
For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
