200. Mark Scammell – Now The Inner Refuge

£1,995.00

Mark Scammell

Now The Inner Refuge

Embroidered thread on cotton

Dimensions: 76 x 100 x 4

Artist’s statement

The work looks back to youthful years in the 1980s where I lived under the tangible threat of annihilation via nuclear bomb.
It is based on photographs I took of myself under the stairs at my family home. This small space was to be used as a temporary shelter against nuclear fallout in the aftermath of a nuclear attack. Cramped with only myself in there, it was somehow supposed to house five of us for several days. The title is taken from a section of the government's Protect & Survive booklet.

All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.

Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.

For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
