Josephine Sweeting

Lewth

Handcarved block of Cornish Polyphant stone

Dimensions: 16 x 14 x 11 cm

Artist’s statement

Shelter is needed by all animals. The human and non human. Ancient dwellings were carved into stone cliffs, shelter taken in caves. This piece carved from 380 milllion year old stone and made in response to my own increasing sense of threat during the pandemic, rise of fascism and division in our society. The shelter is carved to sit parrallel with the edge of the block, appearing to sit sentinel and solid. It could rise or sink from this stand point. 'Lewth' means shelter in Sussex dialect.

All purchased artworks must remain in the exhibition until 12pm on 29 November 2026.

Artworks can be collected between 12pm and 6pm on 29 November 2026, or between 10am and 4pm on 30 November 2026.

For every £1 spent with SUSSEX contemporary, 70p goes directly to the artist.
