INTRODUCING

〰️

INTRODUCING 〰️

Sarah Tyssen

“I design ranges of scarves, shawls and blankets on a hand loom in my workshop. I then work closely with a Yorkshire mill to weave my designs in small limited editions on their mechanised looms.

My handwoven sample pieces are turned into hot water bottle covers, accessories bags, lavender bags and needle cases…so nothing goes to waste!

I have always been hugely inspired by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement, and am thrilled to now live in an old Arts & Crafts weaving workshop, designed by F.W Troup in 1896 for the Peasant Industries in Haslemere, Surrey.”

Matilda Grover

“I am a Sussex-based basket weaver and designer. My specialism in basketry has drawn on my professional experience and education in design and craft. My connection with the natural world and desire to live and work in a sustainable way has led me to work increasingly with natural and local materials.
I strive for my work to reflect my personal style and interest in functional, understated products, taking inspiration from historic, global crafts. When designing and making baskets, I draw on the historic, traditional styles that I admire, whilst weaving contemporary shapes and forms suitable for modern living.”

Chris Gilbert

“Since retiring as a freelance graphic designer, I have studied printmaking and set up a studio workshop at my home in West Sussex.
My work covers two disciplines of printmaking, woodcuts and etching.
I see both as an extension of my love of drawing and photography. Subjects vary from both human interaction in city settings and the natural environment where I live. A love of nature is the inspiration behind most of my work.
The interpretations are derived both from photos and sketches with a desire to explore the unexpected results printmaking can offer.”

This is one of a series of bird woodcuts depicting birds in their everyday environment. Although not designed as an illustration, the process of distilling the natural forms to simple flat shapes, required by the technique, brings to mind early twentieth-century book illustration.

53. Drapery study in Glass (blue) by Grace Ayson
£3,850.00

Catalogue number: 53

Artist: Grace Ayson

Title: Drapery study in Glass (blue)

Medium: Acid etched, hand painted blue flash mouthblown glass, kiln fired. Lead and light.

Dimensions: 64 x 64 x 6cm (framed, LED light backlit)

My series of drapery studies in glass draw inspiration from decorative patterns in the arts and crafts, from the carved drapery of classical sculpture, and the stylised drapery depicted in traditional stained-glass windows. This series of glass works aims to translate the tactile softness of fabric into the inherently rigid and fragile medium of glass.

I hope that displaying the work in Standen House will create a dialogue with its rich history in the arts and crafts, beautiful patterns, decorative details, furniture, textiles and fabrics. The house and its heritage of design and truth to materials is an inspiration.

Working with the traditions of stained glass but innovating with contemporary techniques, in 'Drapery Study in Glass (I) in Yellow', I have gently sculpted the glass to create a fold where the piece hangs, while also creating the illusion of softness through painted detail and acid-etching techniques and lead lines. By working into the surface of the glass, I build painted tonal variation, pattern, and texture that evoke the look and sense of fabric.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
