Title: Quail, Broad Bean, Wild Garlic & Pea
Medium: chasing and repoussé silver-plated copper platter
Dimensions: Height: 31.5 cm; Width: 24 cm; Depth: 2 cm
Drawing on Standen's Arts & Crafts values, the platter celebrates seasonal produce and skilled handwork, encouraging reflection on the relationship between food, nature, and the domestic table.
Quail, Broad Bean, Wild Garlic & Pea is a repoussé and chased silver-plated platter inspired by the seasonality of British cooking and the rituals surrounding the dining table. At its centre sits a whole quail, framed by broad beans, wild garlic, peas and pea shoots arranged as a botanical border. The composition draws from the visual language of food preparation, bringing together animal and plant ingredients before they are transformed into a meal.
The work forms part of an ongoing investigation into how dining rituals shape our relationship with nature and consumption. By presenting the ingredients in their recognisable forms, the platter encourages viewers to reflect on the often overlooked origins of food and the cultural processes that separate ingredients from the finished dish.
Designed to be both functional and decorative, the platter can be displayed on a wall when not in use, shifting between tableware and image. In doing so, it explores the intersection of craftsmanship, storytelling and everyday life.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
