Inspired by Standen's integration of art and everyday life.
Mallard, Radicchio, Cherry, Chard & Shallot is a repoussé and chased silver-plated platter that explores the relationship between food, seasonality and cultural tradition. Centred around a wild mallard and surrounded by radicchio, cherries, chard and shallots, the composition references the ingredients of a seasonal game dish while drawing attention to their natural origins.
The work was inspired in part by the phrase “game may contain shot”, often found on restaurant menus. Beyond a practical warning, the phrase serves as a reminder that game meat arrives through a culturally rich history of hunting, landscape management and seasonal harvesting rather than industrial production. By bringing the bird and its accompanying ingredients together within a single decorative surface, the platter invites reflection on the journey from nature to table.
Designed for both use and display, the work blurs the boundary between silverware and artwork, using traditional silversmithing techniques to reconsider familiar aspects of contemporary dining culture.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
