Title: Breakfast is a recipe for success

Medium: Hand built ceramic

Dimensions: 12 x 15 x 15cm

These small clay pieces look to a middle ground between art and functionality, where art meets life. Raw and rough they deliberately evade the manufacturing process and embrace the human hand build, in all its imperfections.

I am interested in how domestic objects both found and made can form something greater than the sum of their parts. Through simple, humble materials and careful placement I hope to enact wonder in viewer’s imaginations. Objects have the power to hold meaning and memories in us, even taking possession of us, ‘which haunts the brain when we least expect it’ (Virginia Woof, Solid Objects), and in doing so have become deeply ingrained in our lives and popular culture. Our desire for a ‘better’ life, to ‘reach the top’ or ‘climb the mountain’ of success can be embedded in us through societal expectations, consumption and advertising.

As our lives become increasingly digitally reliant, it has perhaps become more of an expedition of the mind, as it is the real.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
