Catalogue number: 45
Artist: Emily Barnett
Title: Heritage Apples
Medium: Wall piece using a combination of gouache painting and Canvas and Raised embroidery on silk paper.
Dimensions: 20cm, 15cm, 3cm
Bramley Apple espalier trees from the Kitchen Garden inspire the piece. Canvaswork embroidery was used within the design, influenced by the decorative Needlepoint cushions by Maggie Beal.
This piece is a celebration of the bountiful kitchen garden at Standen House, taking inspiration from the Bramley Apple espalier trees. I was drawn to the detailed botanical imagery and natural colours used in the William Morris wallpapers which I have reflected in my own work. I have used Chinoiserie painting techniques to capture the texture and detail in the branches, which has been worked onto a silk backed paper. I was also inspired by the decorative Needlepoint cushions deigned by Maggie Beal, I have used this traditional Canvaswork technique for the apples in my piece blending colours together through the stitches to create a smooth tonal effect and using felt padding to create a sense of depth. The leaves have been worked from reclaimed suede painted with acrylics and stitched to the piece to give a contemporary feel to the design.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
