Catalogue number: 59
Artist: Emma-Jayne Sargent
Title: Yellow Vase
Medium: Earthenware Vase Slip cast by artist, hand decorated and painted
Dimensions: 25cm high 18 cm widest
When English country gardens sleep it is vital to bring summer memories inside.
Handmade slip-cast vase, and painted surface pattern decorated using coloured clay.
This patterned earthenware vessel’s painting cures during the first firing known as bisque.
Glazed green using engobe over a white clay body paper resist is applied to create a base layer of foliage and florals over its curated patina. More plants are painted finalising the design. A second clear glaze fire reveals the final colour of the piece.
The ethos of the Arts and Craft Movement inspired this functional vase although the work is made to be enjoyed on its own merits very much as decorative art.
Its uniqueness carries the artists touch and decisions creating a singular work designed to suggest and admire natures beauty rather than mimic it.
Yellow Vase shares a bond with the natural world, bringing nature inside, forged from the earth where nature grows it stands as an antithesis to a modern “one click” buying culture. The artist prefers to choose focusing on longevity, the how and why we live in our homes to include what we love, what we will want to keep and what we wish to inherit.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
