Inspired by Standen and the Arts and Crafts movement, this stained glass panel combines William Morris patterns with garden imagery, evoking his poem A Garden by the Sea.

This stained glass panel combines screen printing and hand-painted glass techniques to explore themes of grief, loss, memory, and longing inspired by William Morris’s poem The Garden by the Sea. In the poem, Morris uses the image of a beautiful garden as a contrast to the pain of lost love, creating a sense of yearning for a paradise that once brought happiness and comfort. The sea, with its constant murmur, becomes a powerful symbol of the relentless passage of time and the inevitability of death.

To reflect these ideas, I have screen printed William Morris patterns onto the glass and incorporated them into the forms of the garden shrubs and foliage. These decorative patterns reference Morris’s artistic style while also suggesting memories of a lost and idealised past. Within the garden stand the silhouettes of a man and a woman, separated by distance, symbolising emotional separation, grief, and the loss of connection. Their positioning emphasises the theme of unattainable reunion that runs throughout the poem.

A gate leading towards the sea acts as a visual pathway between the earthly garden and the unknown beyond. Above the gate, an angel represents the gates of heaven, suggesting hope, spiritual transcendence, and the possibility of reunion after death. Together, these elements create a reflective and symbolic interpretation of Morris’s poem.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
