Title: Large ash glazed bowl with copper
Medium: Stoneware bowl with ash and copper
Dimensions: 14cm, 35cm, 35cm
The bowl is made with a wood ash glaze and the copper loved by the Arts and Crafts movement. The earthiness and colours intended to reflect the rural setting, and the shape the elegance of the house.
A large flared bowl in flecked stoneware with copper carbonate added to the rim. The copper acts as a flux with the simple glaze made from wood ash and clay and encourages it to flow down the bowl. The copper, fired in oxidation, forms an intense green and metallic edge. The Arts and Crafts Movement embraced elements of the natural world, and often used copper as a material for both practical and decorative elements in the home. Copper is not considered food-safe so this bowl is purely a decorative piece.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
