76. Fruit Garden Crochet Blanket by Jane Crowfoot

£835.00

Catalogue number: 76

Artist: Jane Crowfoot

Title: Fruit Garden Crochet Blanket

Medium: The crochet blanket has been made by hand using a wool/acrylic mix of yarn.

Dimensions: 128cm x 128cm square

The project was inspired by May Morris's embroidery, tapestry and wallpaper designs, many of which feature at Standen. It was photographed at Standen in 2020.

The Fruit Garden crochet blanket was inspired by the intricate layout drawings and watercolours that May Morris produced when designing her tapestries. The project pays particular reference to the pair of embroidered curtains that May created, alongside her friend and patron of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Theodosia Middlemore, also known as 'Fruit Garden'. Much like May's richly embroidered hangings, my blanket features 3D flowers, clementines and acanthus leaves, evocative of the Arts & Crafts aesthetic.

The design was released as a crochet along project during the pandemic and the patterns were available for free so that crafters around the globe could make their own versions of the blanket. The design built in stages, with each motif getting progressively harder so that crocheters could build upon their skills.

I have been honoured to see the way this project continues to inspire crocheters today. Blankets are by nature a love token - they are a symbol of comfort and warmth, with every stitch lovingly made by hand to create something extra special.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
