Artist: Judy Dibiase

Title: Dandelion

Medium: Parian with printed drawings

Dimensions: height 14cm / width 43cm / depth 14cm

This piece features drawings of dandelions from Standen House, celebrating the beauty of everyday English flora and reflecting Arts and Crafts ideals of nature, simplicity, and handmade design.

This work is derived from observational drawings of dandelions found in the grounds of Standen House. These drawings are transferred onto Parian through screen-printing, combining a hand-led process with a ceramic material that echoes the delicacy of the subject.
Much of my practice is concerned with memory and how we remember. The act of drawing becomes a form of recording and reflection—a process through which fleeting, often overlooked details are held onto. In this context, the dandelion functions as both subject and symbol.
Often dismissed as a weed, the dandelion aligns closely with the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to elevate the everyday and find beauty in the natural world. By focusing on this plant, the work reflects a commitment to craftsmanship, close observation, and the recognition of value in the ordinary.
The three drawings represent stages of the dandelion’s decay over time and are presented across three differently sized bowls. This progression reinforces themes of transience and change. The fragile quality of the Parian further echoes the fragility of memory and the passage of time, creating a connection between material, subject, and concept.
Ultimately, the work the asks viewer to reflect on how moments, materials, and memories are held, transformed, and can inevitably fade.

The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
