78. A Memory of English Paper Piecing by Clare Spender
Catalogue number: 78
Artist: Clare Spender
Title: A Memory of English Paper Piecing
Medium: Hand stitched paper patchwork pieces, calico, book pages and hand stitching
Dimensions: 200cm (when hung) 235 in total, 72cm approx 40cm
Inspired by many hours of hand-stitching that have taken place within the walls of Standen House, this work takes the form of a patchwork hanging. Constructed using the traditional technique of English Paper Piecing, individual paper templates remain within each patch, making visible the hidden structure of the process and revealing traces of its construction. The patches are hand-pieced together with thread, revealing the repetitive labour of making.
The work has no practical function. Rather than serving as a quilt/bedcover, it exists as a decorative and contemplative object, suspended like a curtain or draped in the manner of a traditional patchwork coverlet. By removing its domestic purpose, the piece invites attention to the skill and patience embedded within patchwork traditions.
Patchwork has long been associated with women’s work and the domestic sphere. Historically, quilts and coverlets were made from necessity, using fragments of worn or treasured fabrics that carried personal and familial histories.
This work draws attention to the knowledge, care and time invested in textile practices by countless women. The visible paper pieces usually removed become a metaphor for the often-unseen structures of women’s labour, while the hand-stitching itself stands as a record of presence and connection across generations.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
