Catalogue number: 88
Artist: Jess Littlewood
Title: The Dissolving Now
Medium: Quilted digital collage on cotton
Dimensions: 220.5 x 105.7 x 0.3 cm
Inspired by Morris's quote 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.'
This quilt is inspired by the table at which I live my life. It’s my studio, my dinner table, it’s a place for my children to create and play, it’s the centre of my home. As a result, the table accumulates a vast array of objects which are in a kind of constant rotation. In this way it often becomes something like a museum of family life, the curation of which changes on a daily basis. I wanted to capture a kind of heightened version of this domestic phenomenon by depicting some of our most used and meaningful household objects as though they had been inlaid into the table using marquetry.
Merging the aesthetics of two craft techniques, quilting and wood marquetry, and both digital and handmade processes have allowed me to develop a unique visual language with which to explore my experience of being both artist and mother and wider themes of time, transformation, connection and love.
The exhibition runs until 30 September. Once a purchase has been completed, buyers may choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page before purchase.
