6. Homage to Nature (2nd Ballad) by Jarrad Belton

Made from: Wood (English Walnut)

Dimensions: 82cm x 40cm x 49cm

Year made: 2024

The overall concept of the piece is a homage to nature and the material I work with. Using pieces that have grown with a curve instead of steam bent, allowing nature and phototropism of the tree to take the lead on the piece rather than subjecting the timber to a forced shape. The contrasting metal finish on the underside represents the shiny promises of improvement towards environmental change.

The table top was carefully measured out based on the exact angle of a walnut leaf. From these measurements I was able to transfer an overall shape and mitre angles to a blank. I then machined and hand planed some of the finest English Walnut in my small collection to establish the surface of the table. These components were then split in half, allowing for an exact book match. As the veins splay across the top, the selection of material is evident with subtle variations in colour and grain which is to be expected in the natural world. Emulating the complexity and individual beauty found in our trees.

Purchased artworks will remain on display as part of the exhibition until it closes on 30 September. Buyers may then choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Courier dispatches will commence from 7 October. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page.
