7. Rillenkarren Vase by Madi Boyd

Made from: Ceramic (Stoneware)

Dimensions: 21 cm x 17 cm x 17 cm

Year made: 2026

Following William Morris, this hand-built vase is the result of close observation of nature, but rather than flowers, this work is inspired by geological formations created when rock is sculpted by rainfall over millennia. Rillenkarren is the name given to the rivulets or thin shallow crevices that are carved into rock by the rain. I love the thought of the rocks being slowly, imperceptibly sculpted into these beautiful forms over hundreds of human lifetimes. In this work I have attempted to capture the same mixture of majesty and mystery that I feel when looking at these ancient geological sites.

After examining the rock formations, I work intuitively – building up the layers over time then carving into them to create an organic feel, as though sculpted by nature.
In its subject matter and appearance, it relates to the Standen Quarry garden.

Purchased artworks will remain on display as part of the exhibition until it closes on 30 September. Buyers may then choose either to collect their artwork free of charge from Standen House on 2 October, or to have the work professionally packed, insured and couriered by Sussex Contemporary. Courier dispatches will commence from 7 October. Delivery charges vary according to the size, weight and value of each artwork and are detailed on the individual product page.
